Creosote oil obtained by means of distillation of crude coal tar is called traditional creosote. The most frequent question we receive is: “Your creosote is petroleum, wood-tar or coal-tar made?” Answer: our creosote is of coal-tar origin :) i.e. we offer for sale creosote made by coal tar distillation.  Only creosote obtained by crude coal tar distillation is known as traditional creosote oil.

Used for wood preservation and for vacuum pressure wood treatment in particular creosote is controversially valued.  Thus, although creosoted wood has acknowledged harmful human health effect and environmental impact, nevertheless no other wood treatment chemical can substitute Creosote’s durable and strong quality effect. Hence, coal-tar creosote is mainly used in preservation of wood for industrial purposes: electricity poles, railway ties and sleepers, etc. The process of vacuum pressure impregnation of wood with coal-tar creosote is called creosoting.

Coal tar creosote is famous in its stringent odor; rather say a powerful specific smell featuring traditional coal-tar creosote. It is due to the coal-tar creosote specific chemical composition. Coal-tar creosote is a mixture of diverse chemicals that can be combined in four major classes of creosote compounds:

Each country regulates composition and use of creosote on its own. And these regulations are mainly applied to the content of benzo-a-pyrene (BaP) and phenols. In Europe all chemicals imported, to EU, produced and/or used in EU must be registered with ECHA and obtain a REACH registration number. Moreover, in 2003 EEC with the aim to protecting human health and the environment in the European Member States decided restricting use of dangerous substances and Creosote in particular.
